An extremely underrated action RPG series that included ports to PC Engine and a spin off series called Fray. Starting my uploads of this series with the popular second game in the series, which I happened to have a bunch of HQ resources to use as artwork so I tried to switch things up with the video dimensions. The music has many stylistic elements that represent the best of Ryuji Sasai and Tadahiro Nitta, Ryuji being more of a hard rocker and Tadahiro eccentric and bouncy. As a game the MSX2 version feels a bit sluggish to play but the soundtrack is amazing because of the chip powering MSX audio having an interesting balance between old school 8-bit style sound and the more powerful chips that powered arcade machines. The simplicity somehow causes certain soundtracks to ring out with clarity and sound amazing, with most of the Microcabin works having a reputation for sounding great on MSX hardware. Project Egg has been the de facto place to pick up Xak II (similar to GOG but for Japanese retro PC games and music) and rumored to release a version of their service for Switch, so fingers crossed this game will be more widely available and that they will think videos like this are helpful marketing!
