A no miss clear run of Cocoron (ココロン) for the Famicom. Captured straight from an AV Famicom, no cheats. The oft-forgotten platformer by Rockman creator, Akira Kitamura! I've got a lot to say about this game, but I said most of it a few years ago. My play on this one is... well, I've probably beaten Cocoron a couple dozen times over the last few years on many a whim, but I've never really understood how to play it *well*. I kind of tend to just meander about, and getting a nomiss felt a little awkward and frustrating. No weapon in this game ever feels like it's powerful or effective enough, and the arguably non-linear upgrading for most weapons makes their highest level worse than their first just because it takes longer for the additional projectiles to clear the screen and reset the shot rate. Cocoron is a game clearly made with a lot of love, and jeez louise do I love anything with some Utata Kiyoshi sprite art, but it just feels weak and made from too many disparate parts. The looseness of the early parts suggests a game you chip away at and take your time with, forgetting the pacing and imaginary rules of most classic action games, but the later game goes into linear stages with some surprisingly mean platforming challenges and a huge send-back for a single death. It's just very... confused. Some potential characters you could create are unplayably weak or die too quickly for a game that kind of sends barrages at you. I'll probably always love this game, but I'll probably also always wonder if that unreleased PCE version that that Japanese woman is sitting on actually improves anything. I really loathe hoarders, and my love for this offbeat title leaves the PCE version my most desired unreleased game. Seirei Densetu Lickle, the debatably spiritual sequel, feels like a tremendous improvement on this, but it feels like an improvement in the action game direction more than the potentially friendly exploring & relaxing direction this one dreamed of entertaining. Ah well, there's always stuff like Trip World.
